Playing a Record

A gramophone record has a diameter of 30.5 centimetres. The centre is unused and has a diameter of 10 centimetres. There is also a smooth outer edge 1.25 centimetres wide around the recording.

If the grooves are 36 to the centimeter, how far does the needle move during the actual playing of the record?

Answer:
About Nine centimeter: the needle moves from the outermost groove to the innermost groove in an arc. The radius of this arc is the length of the pick – up arm.
